Upper Gastrointestinal Study What is an Upper Gastrointestial Study? The Upper GI Study is performed to evaluate the upper digestive tract, namely the esophagus, stomach and upper segment of the small bowel. A flavored mixture of barium is used to visualize these areas with the aid of a fluoroscope (a machine which allows the radiologist to observe you while you drink). Also, a technologist will take several radiographs (images) of the above area. What must I do to prepare? To assure that your digestive tract is empty, it is important that you not eat or drink anything after midnight the evening before the examination. For this reason, studies which require such fasting are scheduled during the morning hours. If you are presently taking medication, you may do so with 1 ounce of water. If you are diabetic, please consult your physician about your diet and diabetic medication. When and where should I report for my examination? We have reserved a time for your examination so it is important that you be prompt. It is suggested that you arrive at the hospital at least 20 minutes before your scheduled time to register in the Patient Access Department. Patient Access is located on the first floor of the hospital to the left of the main hospital lobby. You will then be directed to the Radiology Department located on the first floor of the Diagnostic and Therapeutic area of the medical center. After you have arrived in the Radiology Department, a technologist will escort you to a dressing booth where you will change into a hospital gown in preparation for your imaging procedure. How long will the study take? Generally, an Upper GI Study will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. However, it is advisable that you allow yourself at least one hour, since all images taken must be reviewed by the radiologist before you leave. NOTE: If you are also scheduled for a small bowel study, you will be given an additional cup of barium, and films will be taken at several intervals, generally every 30 minutes to one hour. The study will most likely take an additional 1 to 3 hours depending upon the length of time the barium takes to reach the conclusion of your small bowel. Is there anything I must do during the study? The procedure is performed by a radiologist and a technologist who will ask you to do several things during your study such as:
When will I know the results? After your procedure is completed, the radiologist will review your images, and the results of your procedure will be mailed to your physician. Questions or concerns?
