It was my idea to make a very brief appearance, then leave - fully expecting a low attendance due to the damp, dreary, and rainy conditions. I am presently being treated for Stage 4 breast cancer metastasized to the bones. Rain and I are like oil and water dark skies equal dark days. At this stage of the "CANCER GAME", my husband will usually forego a golf game to do anything my heart desires, therefore, he reluctantly got into the driver's seat and we headed for St. Benedict's Grove. What I saw shocked me. There were hundreds of people there - survivors and families lies. I was greeted and given a carnation, we both got nametags, food was abundant, and I was given a beautiful plaque (which is dear to my heart). There were door prizes and entertainment (which was magnificent). We laughed, we ate, we sang. The event was organized and MC'd by Terry Niedrowski. She did an exemplary job. I laughed with other patients that I had met during treatments and we all enjoyed the entire event. When I was swaying and clapping to the beat of Elvis, I forgot about the dampness... I forgot about the pain. When we left the picnic. my heart was lighter. I was in awe at the actions of your employees. Not only do they work so very hard at St. Joseph Cancer Center and Radiation Oncology... they worked hard to make this event so very special. They never complain. They treat all patients with dignity and respect. They give hugs freely. They are so compassionate. As busy as they are, they always take time to listen, and care, and love. Your entire staff makes this disease a little easier to endure. Kind regards, Cancer Survivor |
